A plumb bob is a weight, with a pointed tip on the bottom, suspended from a string and used as a vertical direction as a reference point. Plumb bobs were appreciated for their ability to furnish a true vertical line. The ancient Egyptians used plumb tools for leveling and as a way to continue distances vertically. They also used it for astronomy, navigation, surveying, and building.
