Seljuk Shallow Tray Circa 12th century AD This impressive brass shallow tray is formed with a broad, gently sloping walls and an everted rim. The centre is set with a roundel showing a sphinx framed by scrolling arabesques. Around this runs a frieze of panels filled with interlace and cursive inscription, radiating towards the rim, while the outer wall is ornamented with alternating calligraphic cartouches and circular medallions of vegetal scrolls. The Seljuk Dynasty, a medieval Turkic empire spanning the 11th to 13th centuries AD, originated in Central Asia and expanded westward, notably securing Anatolia after the pivotal Battle of Manzikert in 1071. Governed by a centralised authority under a sultan, the Seljuks became patrons of Islamic art and culture, fostering advancements in literature, architecture, and the sciences. Renowned for military prowess, they significantly influenced the Middle East and Anatolia's geopolitical landscape.
