Portieux-Vallerysthal - Vase - Verre opalescent
An exceptional vase made of opalescent glass in a rare, milky-blue shade. It is a beautiful example of decorative glass from the transitional period circa 1890–1920.
Features and Craftsmanship
Material (Opalescent Glass):
The glass is milky and semi-translucent, characterized by a natural opalescent glow. In transmitted light, the edges and thicker areas take on an intensified milky-blue hue, achieved by adding calcium phosphate to the glass mixture.
The vase features a slender neck and a rounded, bulbous body. Its lower section is decorated with a distinctive raised Hobnail/Raspberry pattern, reminiscent of raspberries or blackberries, while the widely flared, wavy rim is a hallmark of Art Nouveau and late Victorian trumpet-shaped vases.
Origin and Dating
Portieux-Vallerysthal (PV) – one of the oldest and most renowned French producers of opalescent and coloured pressed glass.
Estimated production period: circa 1890–1920.
