Satoh graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai) in 1970, completing his postgraduate studies in ceramics in 1972 under the guidance of celebrated masters Fujimoto Yoshimichi and Tamura Kōichi. His graduation work received the Salon de Printemps Prize, marking the beginning of a career that has included numerous solo and group exhibitions in Japan and abroad. This piece belongs to his expressive sculptural works and features a rough, stone-like textured surface with contrasting bands of colour. “Sekka” literally means stone-transformation. The form has an architectural, geometric presence, designed as a wall-mounted vessel. A hanging metal fitting is attached to the back, and the lower section bears the impressed mark “Satoh 1997.” The original wooden storage box includes the hand-written title and signature with seal. The accompanying cloth also bears the artist’s seal. Minor signs of use are present, and the wooden storage box shows some light staining. It remains in good used condition overall.
