Bernard Larsson - Berlin I Berlin. The entire city at the time of the construction of the Wall 1961–1964 (MINT - 2019

FANTASTIC GERMAN PHOTOBOOK by Bernard Larsson - with highly impressive photos of the divided Berlin at the time of the construction of the Wall 1961–1964 (showing pictures from both sides). Bernard Larsson, born 1939, was assistant of William Klein in Paris, and is the maker of the book 'Die ganze Stadt Berlin' ("The entire city Berlin") from 1963 (Manfred Heiting, Thomas Wiegand, Deutschland im Fotobuch, page 232). THIS IS THE VERY FIRST PHOTOBOOK AUCTION ON CATAWIKI - dedicated entirely to the world of the former "DDR"/"GDR" ("GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC" or "EAST GERMANY") which existed from 1949 to 1990. Still largely undiscovered and unexplored, this field offers a wealth of fascinating discoveries for collectors. 5Uhr30.com presents exceptional works by renowned and emerging artists, survey works, compelling monographs, as well as extraordinarily rare small vintage catalogues, vintage children’s books and vintage factory photobooks; signed publications, posters, and much more. 'A historical document of particular significance is the large photographic portrait of Berlin created by Swedish photographer Bernard Larsson, born 1939, between 1961 and 1964, during the first four years after the construction of the Wall that divided the city in two. His Swedish passport allowed him to take photographs in both the eastern and western parts of the city and to document the living conditions of the citizens of Berlin as a whole. ‘People of the world, look at this city!’ were the famous words of the Governing Mayor of West Berlin, Ernst Reuter, when the Soviet Union made its first attempt to force West Berlin to surrender with a supply blockade in 1948. The people of the world then looked spellbound at the city again in 1989 when the Wall finally fell after 28 years. It is to Bernard Larsson's credit that he captured the confrontation between the blocs at the moment of its most intense escalation for the people of East and West. Larsson later achieved further fame when he photographed the West Berlin student revolt of 1967/68. The famous picture of Benno Ohnesorg being shot also comes from him. With this portrait of Berlin, which shows the city in a special situation, we conclude our Berlin trilogy for the time being.'
