The sculpture dates from the Edo to Meiji period and was later enshrined altar cabinet. Fudō Myōō is shown with his characteristic attributes: the vajra sword in the right hand (now missing) and a rope in the left for capturing evil forces. The cabinet’s exterior is finished in black lacquer, while the interior is coated with lacquer mixed with gold powder, creating a rich luminous contrast. The halo behind the deity is made of openwork metal, and the gold-coloured areas of the sculpture are painted with lacquer blended with gold powder. The sculpture is fixed to the cabinet base. Visible signs of age include minor abrasions, surface dullness, discolouration, cracks and small losses in the lacquer, grime accumulation, and rust on metal fittings.
