Colima Poterie figure masculine debout. licence d'importation espagnole - 19.5 cm
Pre-Hispanic standing male figure. Colima (200 B.C.–300 A.D.). Height: 19.5 cm.
The peoples of the region known as “Western Mexico,” which includes the present-day states of Guanajuato, Michoacán, Jalisco, Nayarit, Colima, and Guerrero, used ceramics as an almost exclusive means of artistic and religious expression. In the art of pottery, they achieved remarkable results, placing them at an enviable level within the context of world ceramics.
Individual statues and group scenes from Colima form a true documentary of the simple daily life of these peoples. Among this incredible variety of forms, the hollow and finely polychrome vessels and statues from Colima undoubtedly represent a high point.
This standing figure features a pair of earrings, a small headdress, a necklace, and a loincloth. There is an inscription on the back.
