Artist Profile 村田哲夫 Murata Tetsuo (known by his artist name Juko) is a distinguished Japanese ceramic artist who has dedicated his life to perfecting the art of kiln transformation glazes. In 1934 (Showa 9), he established his first kiln in Mikawa Takahama together with his father, where they completed the development of "Juko-yaki" (Juko ware). In 1965 (Showa 40), after receiving crucial guidance from the legendary potter Kato Tokuro who advised him to "create your own original work," Murata established the Juko Tosha (Juko Pottery Studio) in Owari Toyoyama, where he began his lifelong pursuit of kiln transformation Shino glazes. In 1978 (Showa 53), he successfully completed and presented his signature "Juko Yohen Shino" technique. His work has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award at the Nagoya Pan-Pacific Expo ceramics division. He has served as a judge for the Aichi Prefecture Cultural Exhibition and became the chairman of the Japan Ceramic Society Owari Branch. His exceptional work was featured in the "Showa Ceramics Encyclopedia" published by Kogei Shuppan, where he was recommended as a unique and conscientious artist.
