Peter Hujar - Peter Hujar - Allerheiligenpresse - 1981-1981

It was not until some time after his death that Peter Hujar was recognized as an important American photographer. In the early 1960s he met Andy Warhol, for whom he also posed. In 1967 he met Diane Arbus at a photography masterclass given by Richard Avedon. Hujar quit commercial photography in 1967 to pursue photography in his familiar gay milieu. He became an influential artist and activist within the gay liberation movement and collaborated with Susan Sontag, the author of ‘On Photography’, a groundbreaking work on the subject, beloved but also controversial. In 1981, Hujar met writer, filmmaker and artist David Wojnarowicz, who remained associated with him for the rest of his life. Robert Mapplethorpe was also closely connected with Hujar for a long time. Both gay white men made uninhibited homoerotic work at the intersection of pornography and visual art. Mapplethorpe reduced his subjects to almost abstract forms in his work, while Hujar emphasized the peculiarities of his models. The AIDS epidemic raged in the 1980s and Hujar was diagnosed in 1987. He died the same year, surrounded by his friends. Contains 52 photographs, all printed on the right-hand pages (single-sided printing). With photographs of, among others, David Wojnarowicz, William S. Burroughs, Gary Indiana, Robert Levithan, David Brinzenhofe and Susan Sontag. The book has pages with light dents and fine surface marks, mainly visible in raking light and difficult to capture in photos. This has a minor effect on some of the images. There are also some scuff marks on the front and back covers, as well as slight yellowing along the page edges. Texts in German; contributions by Dieter Hall and Jean-Christophe Ammann (ed. Peter Weiermair). Book size: 23,5 × 21,5 cm softcover Size images: 18,5 x 18,5 cm Title: Peter Hujar (monograph / exhibition catalogue). Publisher: Allerheiligenpresse Year: 1981
