A very large globular porcelain vase by Saitō Unraku III 斎藤雲楽 (b. 1928), head of the Unraku kiln 雲楽窯 in Kyoto.
Decorated with a powerful enamel design of Raijin 雷神 (Thunder God) and Fūjin 風神 (Wind God) shown on opposite sides of the vessel. The dramatic figure is rendered with strong contours and vivid colours characteristic of Kyoto ware, standing out against the rounded form of the vase. The underside is signed.

Complete with its original signed and sealed tomobako, a signed and sealed wooden sign, and a folder containing old photographs of the piece.
Saitō Unraku III (b. 1928) is the third-generation master of the Unraku kiln, makers of Kyō-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki 京焼・清水焼. Born in Gojōzaka, Kyoto’s historic ceramic district, he trained under Unraku II before founding his own workshop in 1950 and later inheriting the Unraku name. Known for technical innovation and for developing the kiln’s signature seimattō 青抹陶 glaze, he was recognised in 1977 as a Traditional Craftsman 伝統工芸士.
