In the United States, this was often equated to twenty-five cents in currency for the purpose of the ritual's lesson. The use of the shekel in the Mark Degree relates to the wages paid to workmen during the building of King Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, which is a central element in Masonic lore and ritual.
