Sasaki Shoraku (Third Shoraku)
Born in 1944 in Kameoka, Kyoto Prefecture.
He hails from the Raku ware kiln (Shoraku Kiln), a family business that has been passed down since his grandfather's generation, and studied under his father, the second-generation owner.
He specializes in classical pieces and reproductions of masterpieces.
In 1972, he went independent to focus on the study of Raku tea bowls.
In 1996, on his 60th birthday, he was bestowed the kiln name "Kiraigama" and the artistic name "Kyoshitsu" by Master Fukutomi Setsutei of the Daitokuji School.
In 2023, his son, "Second Generation Kyoshitsu," will take over as "Kyoshitsu," continuing the tradition while incorporating new techniques into his work.
Raku Ware
This unique piece of pottery has been in continuous production for over 400 years, from the early Tensho era (late 16th century) to the present day.
While other ceramics and porcelains have been imitated around the world, Raku ware is uniquely Japanese and is the only pottery born and cultivated in Kyoto.
Furthermore, Raku ware was not intended for everyday use, but was made specifically for the tea ceremony.
