The Four Sacred Beasts, originating in China and later transmitted to Japan, are collective terms for divine beasts that govern the directions of East, West, South, and North. The four beasts, namely the Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise, are revered as the guardian spirits of the royal palace, and collectively they represent the mythical creatures associated with the four cardinal directions in Chinese mythology, each guarding a direction of the world. The Azure Dragon governs the East, the Vermilion Bird governs the South, the White Tiger governs the West, and the Black Tortoise governs the North, with each being assigned to a specific season of the year. The Four Sacred Beasts were worshipped to dispel evil spirits and create a better environment. Placing them in their respective cardinal directions was believed to drive away malevolent forces and bestow various blessings upon the surroundings. The Vermilion Bird, characterized by its five-colored feathers and control over fire, symbolizes summer and represents the fields. It is said to ward off disasters and difficulties while inviting peace and prosperity. Shimizu-yaki is a type of Japanese pottery primarily produced in the area surrounding Kiyomizu Temple in Shiga Prefecture. Its history dates back to the Muromachi period. This pottery utilizes abundant local clay resources and is known for its beautiful glazes and distinctive patterns.
