The satellite itself is made of aluminum with four delicate steel antennas that trail behind it. The base has a cap of gold finished metal, which is imprinted/embossed with a image of the Euro-Asian continent. Additionally, it is marked "4-X 1957 CCCP". The "4-X" denote the date of October 4 - the day of the launch. The base is Bakelite.
