Aoki Mokubei (1767–1833) was a Kyo ware potter and nanga painter during the late Edo period. He was born in Kyoto, in a family running a restaurant in Kyoto and learned art initially from Okuda Eisen. He studied calligraphy under Fuyo Kou at a young age, showing great talent; however, when he found pottery, he opened a studio in Awataguchi, Kyoto at the age of 30 and won fame for his pottery. Five years later, he was invited by the Maeda Family of the Kaga clan, and he made efforts to revive Kaga Kutani ware. He became famous for his sencha (green tea) utensils made in different styles, including sometsuke (white pottery with indigo patterns), seiji (celadon porcelain), and nanban-utsushi. Aoki Mokubei had a friendly relationship with Kou Fuyou and Kimura Kenkadou, and thereby obtained the knowledge as a literati. He later enjoyed the favor of Tanomura Chikuden and Rai Sanyou. There are also many outstanding works of his literati paintings, while some of them are designated as Important Cultural Property.
