These three exquisite ukiyo-e prints — Sōshū Hakone Kosui (相州箱根湖水), Honjo Tatekawa (本所立川), and Kakuta no Suisha (隠田の水車) — are all part of Fugaku Sanjūrokkei (富嶽三十六景), the iconic series by Edo-period ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai. Classified as meisho-e (名所絵,"famous place prints"), the series centers on the theme of "viewing Mount Fuji from locations across the Kantō region." Though titled "Thirty-Six Views," it actually comprises 46 works, first published in the 1830s (starting in 1831). These three prints are reissues released by Japan’s Ōedo Hanga-sha (大江戸木版社) in the 1970s.
1. Sōshū Hakone Kosui (相州箱根湖水) (Series No. 8)A classic late-Edo meisho-e work, it depicts the shores of Lake Ashi in Hakone (modern-day Kanagawa Prefecture) — a mountain lake that served as a restful stop for travelers during the Edo period.
2. Honjo Tatekawa (本所立川) (Series No. 12)Another late-Edo meisho-e masterpiece, it captures the lumber yard landscape of Edo’s Honjo district (modern-day Tokyo’s Sumida Ward), offering a vivid record of urban industrial life in the Edo era.
3. Kakuta no Suisha (隠田の水車) (Series No. 15)A beloved work in the series, it portrays the waterwheel labor scene in Edo’s Kakuta district (modern-day Tokyo’s Kōtō Ward), preserving a snapshot of folk production and daily life.
Japanese descriptive notes are printed on the protective paper of these three prints. With age, the paper shows signs of oxidation (slight yellowing) and minor mold spots; the overall condition is good.
