Prima edizione rarissima di uno dei più ambiziosi poemi epici dedicati alla fondazione di Venezia, pubblicata nel 1621 in sontuoso formato in folio da Alessandro Ciotti, con magnifico frontespizio figurato e tavole xilografiche.
La Venetia edificata è un’opera monumentale che intreccia mito fondativo, identità repubblicana e tensione visionaria, inscrivendosi nella grande stagione barocca della celebrazione civica in forma poetica. Giulio Strozzi, figura centrale della vita culturale veneziana tra accademie, teatro e prime esperienze d’opera in musica, costruisce in dodici canti una vera e propria cosmogonia letteraria della Serenissima, tra battaglie, prodigi e apparizioni allegoriche. Elegante legatura del XVIII secolo in vitellino nocciola, con cornice di triplo filetto dorato sui piatti e dorso decorato in oro con tassello, segni di usura. Pp. [8], 124, [2].

Poema eroico in dodici canti che fonde leggenda e cronaca per celebrare la nascita di Venezia, dalla fondazione mitica alle guerre contro gli Unni. Quest’opera è un atto d’amore e d’orgoglio repubblicano, in cui Venezia è raffigurata come nuova Roma, città sorta dall’acqua per volere divino e destinata a dominare sui mari e sui barbari. L’edizione del 1621, oggi rarissima, precede di tre anni l’edizione completa e definitiva. Le tavole xilografiche e il frontespizio figurato ne fanno un libro prezioso anche per l’apparato illustrativo. Nella simbologia barocca, la fondazione della città assume i tratti di una ierofania: Venezia nasce dall’elemento acqueo, si arma contro le forze caotiche e si eleva come potenza ordinatrice, in un ciclo che richiama il mito della creazione cosmica e la costruzione dell’urbs ideale.

Giulio Strozzi (1583–1652), poeta, drammaturgo e librettista veneziano, fu una figura centrale della vita intellettuale barocca. Membro delle Accademie degli Incogniti e degli Unisoni, collaborò con Monteverdi e altri musicisti del tempo, scrivendo alcuni dei primi libretti per l’opera lirica veneziana. Fu anche tutore e padre adottivo di Barbara Strozzi, celebre compositrice. Il suo stile mescola erudizione, immaginazione epica e tensione civile.
PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION
Stampata a Venezia nel 1621 da Alessandro Ciotti, questa è la prima edizione dell’opera, che include solo i primi dodici canti del poema. L’edizione definitiva, con tutti i ventiquattro canti, vide la luce nel 1624. La prima tiratura fu probabilmente limitata, destinata a un pubblico selezionato e accademico, e oggi è di estrema rarità.
