Descrizione del venditore
Vincenzo Colleoni (Active in Venice in the second half of the 19th century) - Interior scene with masked figures.
110 x 160 cm unframed, 145 x 194 cm with frame.
Old oil painting on canvas, in a gilded wooden frame.
Signed lower left: "V. Colleoni".
Vincenzo Colleoni was a Venetian painter active in the second half of the 19th century and a member of the Realist movement. This movement opposed Romanticism and Neoclassicism, seeking to depict everyday life and reality with a more objective and less idealized approach. Unfortunately, few sources exist about Colleoni, and he is among those artists who still require more in-depth critical study. We know that he exhibited at the Parma National Exhibition in 1870 with the painting "The Importunate Dog," and in Naples in 1877 he brought five works with the titles: "Visit to a Painter's Studio," "Pearl Threader," "The Acrobats," "A Ray of Sunshine After the Rain," and "Childish Concerns." In our painting, signed in red by the artist, we find a dynamic interior scene where the two female figures in the center are pushing away a crowd of masked figures, very curious and interested in seeing the swaddled baby in the left corner of the canvas up close. Even in the dim light, a nurse is pushing away a figure in a hat. The costumes suggest a social event, while the laughter and intense curiosity of those present allow us to imagine a scandal linked to the birth of this infant.
