A fine Bizen ware bancha kyūsu (everyday tea teapot) by Sakakibara Hōzan, complete with its original signed wooden tomobako and explanatory leaflet.
This teapot beautifully expresses the essence of traditional Bizen-yaki, one of Japan’s most esteemed unglazed stoneware traditions. Fired in a wood-burning climbing kiln (noborigama), the surface reveals natural kiln effects such as sangiri (fire marks) and goma (sesame-like ash deposits) in warm tones of yellow, black, and deep brown. The earthy texture and subtle variations in color are the result of high-temperature firing and natural ash glazing, making each piece entirely unique.
The handle is elegantly wrapped in rattan, providing both aesthetic refinement and practical insulation. The lid fits securely, and the overall balance of the form reflects Hōzan’s mastery of traditional craftsmanship combined with functional design.
The piece is accompanied by its original tomobako (signed wooden storage box) and leaflet detailing the artist’s background. It is in unused, pristine condition.

Sakakibara Hōzan（榊原芳山, born 1917）was a traditional Bizen ware craftsman from Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture. After apprenticing under the third-generation Matsuda Kazan, he established his own kiln. He specialized in wood-fired Bizen stoneware using traditional climbing kilns, producing works characterized by natural kiln transformations such as sangiri and goma effects. His oeuvre includes tea bowls, sake cups, teapots, jars, and flower vases, reflecting the rustic elegance and powerful aesthetic of Bizen ceramics.
