Descrizione del venditore
Recent Integrated Physical Geography Atlas (最近 統合地文地図 Saikin Tōgō Chimon Chizu) is a rare Japanese educational atlas published by Dai Nippon Tosho Co., Ltd. in Meiji 39 (1906) during the late Meiji period, when Japan was rapidly modernizing its scientific and educational systems.
This book was written by Dr. Yamashita Manjiro, a scholar of geography and natural sciences, and was intended as a teaching aid for middle and higher educational institutions. It presents a systematic overview of physical geography using a series of carefully printed maps and diagrams. The work reflects the period when Western scientific knowledge was actively introduced into Japanese education and adapted to the Japanese curriculum.
Inside the book are approximately 32 pages of maps and explanatory diagrams illustrating topics such as map projections, global temperature zones, atmospheric pressure and wind patterns, rainfall distribution, ocean currents, and glacial formations. Several maps are beautifully printed with subtle color shading, making the geographical and climatological information easier to understand for students of the time.
Particularly notable are the detailed world maps illustrating climatic zones and atmospheric circulation, as well as diagrams explaining different map projection methods. These maps demonstrate the transition of Japanese educational publishing toward modern scientific cartography in the early twentieth century.
The volume is bound in a green cloth hardcover with elegant embossed decorative borders, typical of educational publications of the late Meiji era. The typography and layout reflect the aesthetic style of early modern Japanese textbooks. Stamps from a former institutional library or educational collection are visible, suggesting that this copy was originally used in an academic or school setting.
Today, works like this are appreciated not only as historical educational materials but also as collectible examples of early modern Japanese cartography and scientific publishing. It is an attractive piece for collectors interested in antique maps, the history of geography, or Meiji-period educational books.
