Italian school (XIX) - The Bride's Preparation.
78 x 64 cm (unframed) - 94 x 80 cm (framed).
Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
The scene depicts the preparation of a young bride in traditional costume from central Italy. The protagonist, dressed in an embroidered white dress, red bodice and gold bracelets, is assisted by an older woman arranging her lace bridal veil. Around her the domestic scene comes to life: a young girl seated on the ground holds an embroidery hoop, a boy peers curiously from the doorway and a woman in the background is busy spinning. The painting belongs to the nineteenth-century tradition of costume painting, with particular care in rendering the details of traditional bridal dress.
Condition report: Original canvas. Small paint losses present on the pictorial surface. Frame presents breaks and losses.
