Descrizione del venditore
Kishin Mask 鬼神面 Japanese Noh play Wooden Mask / Demon Oni God mask
Kishin Mask 鬼神面
These masks depict deified demons, fierce deities and supernatural creatures. Characterised by wide-open eyes and fierce expressions baring fangs, they are imbued with the significance of guardian deities that ward off evil spirits and misfortune, as well as symbolising prayers for bountiful harvests and good health.
Carved with a commanding presence, this Kishin mask embodies the formidable spirit of a deified demon, its deeply furrowed brow and tightly drawn mouth conveying a restrained yet overwhelming force that seems to emerge from within the wood itself; unlike more exaggerated oni representations, this expression carries a quiet intensity, suggesting not only wrath but also vigilance and protection. In the tradition of Japanese Noh and ritual performance, Kishin masks represent divine beings who, though fearsome in appearance, serve as guardians against misfortune, embodying the duality of terror and benevolence that lies at the heart of many spiritual traditions. The natural grain of the wood remains visible beneath the carving, enhancing the sense of age and authenticity while adding a subtle organic rhythm to the surface, as if the material itself participates in the mask’s presence. Such a piece carries more than visual impact—it introduces a powerful symbolic energy into a space, offering both a striking focal point and a quiet sense of protection, making it especially compelling when displayed in an interior that values depth, tradition, and a connection to the unseen forces of history and belief.
