The 2 Bu Kin is a rectangular Japanese gold coin issued
during the late Edo period under the Tokugawa Shogunate.
These coins circulated in Japan between approximately 1856 and 1860,
shortly before the end of the samurai era and the opening of Japan
to Western trade.
“Bu” was a traditional Japanese monetary unit.
A 2 Bu Kin represented half of a larger gold denomination called a Ryō.
The coin was struck in a gold alloy and used mainly by merchants
and higher-value transactions in Edo-period Japan.
