African tribal stone sculpture depicting a stylized horse and rider.
The sculpture is hand-carved from a single block of stone, likely steatite / serpentine, and presents strong geometric abstraction.
The rider is represented with elongated proportions and simplified facial features, while the horse shows a powerful stylized body, ridged mane, incised eyes and angular legs.
The openwork structure and balanced composition give the piece a strong architectural presence.
The surface displays a natural aged patina with mineral inclusions and traces of white pigment visible in the eyes.
On the underside of the base, an old European collector’s inscription and inventory marking is visible, indicating circulation within a private Western collection
Horse and rider figures are traditionally associated with authority, leadership, protection and social prestige, and remain among the most sought-after subjects in African tribal art.
