Provenance information:
Object Registration ID: 52

The current owner purchased this Ancient Roman lead head of a male boxer from a private collector, N.N., in Drunen, the Netherlands. The previous owner, a private collector, N.N. from Drunen, stated that the object had been in his collection since an unknown date. According to the previous owner, the object had previously formed part of a private collection in the Netherlands since the 1980s. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner.

Background Information:
This small lead head represents a male figure with compact facial features and a strong, characterful appearance. It may be interpreted as the head of a boxer or arena performer, a subject well known within Roman visual culture. Boxing, athletic contests, and gladiatorial spectacles formed part of the wider world of public entertainment in the Roman Empire, attracting large audiences and becoming familiar subjects in small-scale art and personal objects.

The object may have functioned as a small votive or commemorative piece connected with the popular culture of the Roman arena. Objects with gladiatorial or athletic imagery could serve as personal keepsakes, souvenirs, attachments, or devotional offerings, reflecting the Roman fascination with combat sports, public spectacles, and celebrated performers.

Lead was widely used in the Roman world for practical and small-scale objects, as it was readily available, easy to cast, and suitable for producing compact forms. The modelling of this head reflects the organised craft traditions of the Roman period, in which small figurative objects could be produced for domestic, personal, or ritual use.

Within the context of the Early Roman Imperial period, this piece relates to a world in which public games, athletic displays, and arena performances were an important part of urban and social life. It forms a tangible connection to the ancient world, in which objects of this kind may have carried personal, symbolic, or commemorative meaning for the people who owned and used them."
