LEWIS CARROLL – "SYMBOLIC LOGIC - PART I ELEMENTARY" – First Edition - First Issue - “PRESENTATION COPY” – 1896
"Symbolic Logic - Part I Elementary" by Lewis Carroll.
Authentic first edition, first issue, published by Macmillan and Co. in 1896.
VERY RARE.
A particularly interesting copy for the presence on the title page of a rare embossed publisher’s blindstamp reading:
“PRESENTATION COPY”
This embossed mark likely indicates a presentation or complimentary publisher’s copy, an element rarely found in ordinary trade copies and of special interest to collectors.
First issue points:
Introduction dated “January, 1896”;
absence of the later May 1896 preface found in subsequent issues;
original publisher’s brown/rust cloth binding with black lettering.
Issued as Part I. Elementary, this work was intended as the first volume of a larger treatise on symbolic logic that Lewis Carroll never completed. No further parts were published during his lifetime.
Condition:
original publisher’s binding preserved;
internally generally clean;
moderate wear and light signs of age consistent with the period;
no evident major restorations;
complete copy.
An important work in Lewis Carroll’s mathematical and logical writings, and today regarded as one of the classics of Victorian symbolic logic.
Number of pages: 188 + 3 pages of advertisements for other works by Lewis Carroll published by Macmillan and Co.
Dimensions: 17 x 11.5 cm
