25. ACCA UNC-Details, Japanese Meiji 3rd Year Rising Sun Dragon 1 Yen, Common Yen with Rim. The earliest Japanese 20-sen silver coin was minted in Meiji 3 (1870) and ceased production in Meiji 44 (1911). It was withdrawn from circulation in Showa 28 (1953). In Meiji 1 (1868), Japan decided to mint new currency based on European and American currency styles, changing the currency units from ryo and mon to yen, sen, and ri. However, until Meiji 2 (1869), the old style of currency was still issued. In Meiji 4 (1871), Japan officially finalized the design of the new currency. The earliest 20-sen coin was the Rising Sun Dragon 20-sen silver coin, with two different year markings:
