Karl Sterrer è ampiamente riconosciuto per la sua transizione dai stili accademici tradizionali verso la semplificazione espressionista della prima metà del XX secolo. Il suo stile è generalmente considerato parte dell'Art Nouveau (Jugendstil o Vienna Secession), evolvendosi poi in uno stile nettamente Neo-Barocco. La sua unica sintesi stilistica ha influenzato decisivamente una generazione di rinomati artisti d'avanguardia austriaci, come lo surrealista Rudolf Hausner e il pittore astratto Max Weiler.
