Kissing Cupid – Muse & Putto
Michael Joseph (1941– )
Original Signed Vintage Darkroom Print
Photograph taken in London, c.1960s
A fleeting flirtation unfolds between myth and modernity, marble and muse, fantasy and fashion.
In this beautifully theatrical composition, Michael Joseph places an elegant young woman beside a classical putto, allowing antiquity and contemporary glamour to occupy the same stage. A cloud of drifting feathers softens the scene, while the model turns towards the camera with a glance that is at once knowing, captivating and quietly enigmatic - caught somewhere between innocence, allure and performance.
The stone Cupid remains frozen in eternal contemplation; his living companion exists for only the briefest heartbeat. Joseph transforms this contrast into visual poetry, inviting the viewer to linger in the delicate dialogue between permanence and passing beauty, sculpture and softness, stillness and seduction.
Already, the hallmarks of his later career are unmistakable. Long before becoming internationally celebrated for his imaginative advertising campaigns and elaborate group compositions, Joseph possessed a rare gift for blending classicism with contemporary style, precision with playfulness, elegance with eccentricity. Every element is meticulously composed, yet nothing feels contrived.
Soft light, floating feathers and luminous tonal transitions dissolve the boundaries between studio and dream. The result is less a fashion photograph than a fragment of a forgotten fable - a silver-gelatin reverie where mythology, glamour and imagination briefly occupy the same stage.
Printed by Michael Joseph in his faithful darkroom from his original negative, this vintage silver gelatin print possesses the luminous depth, delicate detail and tactile richness that only analogue craftsmanship can achieve. Hand-signed by the photographer and preserved in its original presentation mount, it is both an artwork and a historical artefact from the formative years of one of Britain's most inventive photographic image-makers.
The reverse of the mounted print conceals another fascinating chapter in Michael Joseph's career. Rather than modern backing board, it is mounted onto an original poster from Christie's Geneva, produced for the celebrated Sarah Bernhardt Diamond Bracelet auction, featuring one of Joseph's sophisticated jewellery advertising photographs. Hidden once framed, this unexpected layer quietly enriches the work's provenance, linking two distinct periods of his remarkable career.
The photograph is presented in an upcycled frame from the Justine Joseph Revisitations Workshop, where reclaimed frames are lovingly restored and thoughtfully paired with original works from the Michael Joseph archive. This philosophy of reuse, restoration and rediscovery reflects values inherited from Michael himself, whose wartime upbringing inspired a lifelong respect for craftsmanship, resourcefulness and beautiful materials.
