Mark Rothko, along with Pollock, was the leading figure of American abstraction. Through his painting, he sought to achieve an ambitious utopia: to express the most basic universal emotions. And for many, he succeeded.
Markus Rothkovitz was born in Russia. From an evidently Jewish family, he emigrated to Oregon in 1910, likely fleeing the anti-Semitism that drove so many brilliant minds to leave.
He studied art in the 1920s, but considered himself self-taught. Before World War II, he explored Expressionist figurative art and immersed himself in the spirit of the avant-garde movements he saw in exhibitions organized by MoMA.
After the war, he began exploring color-field painting, gradually abandoning all figurative references, and in the 1950s—with Abstract Expressionism already established—he embarked on the personal form of abstraction that would define his painting from then on.
Mark Rothko’s enormous paintings feature vast rectangular fields of color with undefined boundaries between them. These are blurred colors that seem to float suspended on the canvas, evoking quite intriguing mystical sensations.
From that point on, Mark Rothko would become an institution in American art. As a protégé of Peggy Guggenheim, his successes would be remarkable. But in the late 1960s, in the midst of a depressive crisis and after painting his series of works in black acrylic, he ultimately took his own life.
A great collector's item.
