Descrizione del venditore

Bothwell Castle on the River Clyde, circa 1910
Oil on canvas, laid on board
Signed lower right: T.H. McKay
70 x 52xm with frame (45 x 30 cm without frame) ; housed in a fine period gilt frame.
This atmospheric oil painting by Scottish artist Thomas Hope McKay captures the romantic ruins of Bothwell Castle, one of Scotland’s most significant 13th-century strongholds, dramatically perched above a bend in the River Clyde near Uddingston, South Lanarkshire.
McKay, active from the late Victorian through the Edwardian era, specialized in evocative Scottish landscapes, often featuring rivers, lochs, and historic sites. Influenced by the Glasgow School and traditional landscape traditions, his works display a masterful handling of soft, diffused light, rich autumnal tones, and lyrical naturalism.
In this composition, the artist presents a serene, contemplative view of the castle’s iconic cylindrical tower and ruined curtain walls rising from densely wooded banks ablaze with russet and ochre foliage. A small boat with figures glides peacefully on the reflective waters of the Clyde in the foreground, adding a subtle human scale and narrative tranquility to the scene. The subtle sky gradients and dappled light filtering through the trees exemplify McKay’s skill in evoking the moody, poetic atmosphere of the Scottish countryside at dusk or early evening.
Provenance and Condition:
The reverse bears the original label of Robert Miller, Artists’ Colourman, 186 Trongate, Glasgow, a respected supplier confirming the period authenticity of the materials. The painting is in good overall condition with stable craquelure consistent with age and no major restoration apparent. It retains a handsome antique gilt frame that enhances its presentation.
Exhibition and Market Context:
Works by Thomas Hope McKay appear regularly at auction in the UK and internationally, with strong demand for his atmospheric Scottish views. Comparable landscapes have realized prices in the low thousands of pounds, reflecting collector interest in quality Edwardian Scottish art.
This fine example beautifully encapsulates the romantic spirit of Scotland’s historic landscape in the early 20th century. An ideal acquisition for collectors of Scottish art, castle enthusiasts, or those seeking a quintessential period landscape with strong decorative appeal.

"The frame visible in the photo is included as a courtesy and does not form an integral part of the work. Any damage to the frame will not be a valid reason for complaints or cancellations of the order”.
