Macabo – Large Funeral Urn with Original Copper Inner Liner – Hand-Painted Faience – France – Circa 1930–1940

A rare and highly collectible Macabo funeral urn, manufactured in France between the 1930s and 1940s, representing one of the finest examples of French funerary ceramic production of the first half of the 20th century.

Entirely crafted in glazed faience and beautifully hand-painted with an elegant cobalt blue floral decoration on a white ground, this impressive urn reflects the refined decorative taste of the period. The rich floral composition, featuring large roses and stylised foliage, demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship for which the Macabo workshops became renowned.

An outstanding feature of this example is the presence of its original removable copper inner liner, preserved complete and in excellent condition. Complete examples retaining the original copper insert are considerably rarer than ordinary examples and are particularly appreciated by collectors because they preserve the urn exactly as originally manufactured.

The lid retains its original gilt-metal finial, while the underside bears the authentic MACABO factory mark, confirming its originality and period.

Although originally intended for funerary use, Macabo urns have become sought-after decorative and historical objects. Their rarity, artistic quality and historical significance have led to increasing interest among collectors of French faience, decorative arts and memorial objects.

Comparable examples have appeared at major international auctions, achieving results exceeding €700, confirming the existence of a specialised collectors’ market for these rare pieces.

Condition is very good considering its age. The glazed faience is well preserved, with only minor age-related wear. The copper inner liner is original, removable and complete. The gilt-metal finial retains a beautiful natural patina.
