Sonny Insinna

With Travel – Bound to Freedom, Sonny Insinna continues his Travel series, a body of work in which animals become symbolic travelers, escaping the destruction and contradictions created by humankind.

A powerful white horse moves forward with determination, embodying freedom, dignity, and resilience. Yet its journey is interrupted by thin red threads wrapped around its legs. They appear fragile—almost insignificant—but they are capable of slowing even the strongest creature.

These threads are not physical restraints; they symbolize the invisible bonds that limit every living being: fear, conflict, prejudice, expectations, and the consequences of human actions. Despite these obstacles, the horse refuses to stop. It continues its movement, transforming struggle into determination.

Within Insinna's symbolic language, the horse represents the instinct to move forward, while the red thread becomes the metaphor of the burdens humanity leaves behind. The contrast between the horse's strength and the apparent fragility of the thread reminds us that true obstacles are often intangible, yet powerful enough to influence our destiny.

Executed in oil, ink, and charcoal on canvas, the artwork combines anatomical precision with expressive contemporary mark-making. Transparent washes of turquoise create an open, almost ethereal space, emphasizing movement and hope, while the energetic red thread introduces tension and emotional intensity.

As throughout the Travel series, the animals are not fleeing from one another.

They are fleeing from the consequences of human conflict and the invisible chains that prevent both humanity and nature from living in harmony.

Travel – Bound to Freedom is a visual reflection on resilience: the strength to continue moving forward, even when freedom is never absolute.
