Michel Leiris ha dedicato quasi trent’anni a La Règle du jeu, una vasta opera autobiografica in quattro volumi, pubblicata tra il 1948 e il 1976. È considerata una delle vette dell’autobiografia moderna.

I quattro volumi sono:

L’obiettivo di Leiris non è raccontare la sua vita in modo cronologico, ma esplorare la formazione della sua identità attraverso:

- i ricordi d’infanzia;
- le associazioni di parole e immagini;
- i sogni, le ossessioni e le emozioni;
- una riflessione permanente sull’atto stesso dello scrivere.

L’opera prosegue un interrogativo centrale: come dire la verità su se stessi? Leiris cerca una sincerità estrema, pur dimostrando che la memoria e il linguaggio deformano inevitabilmente l’esperienza. Così trasforma l’autobiografia in un’indagine sui meccanismi della coscienza e della scrittura.

Il titolo La Règle du jeu rimanda sia alle regole della scrittura autobiografica sia alle regole implicite che governano la vita sociale e l’esistenza. L’opera prosegue i temi del suo libro precedente, L’Âge d’homme, ma in una forma molto più libera, frammentaria e sperimentale.

Michel Leiris devoted nearly thirty years to La Règle du jeu, a vast autobiographical work in four volumes, published between 1948 and 1976. It is considered one of the peaks of modern autobiography.

The four volumes are:

Biffures (1948)
Fourbis (1955)
Fibrils (1966)
Frêle Bruit (1976)

Leiris' goal is not to tell his life chronologically, but to explore the formation of his identity through:

childhood memories;
associations of words and images;
dreams, obsessions, and emotions;
a permanent reflection on writing itself.

The work pursues a central question: how to tell the truth about oneself? Leiris seeks extreme sincerity, while showing that memory and language inevitably distort experience. He thus transforms the autobiography into an investigation of the mechanisms of consciousness and writing.

The title La Règle du jeu refers both to the rules of autobiographical writing and to the implicit rules that govern social life and existence. The work extends the themes of his earlier book, The Age of Man, but in a much freer, fragmentary and experimental form.
