A two-panel screen decorated in lacquer, depicting a dynamic procession of numerous galloping horses sweeping across an atmospheric mountainous landscape.
The composition unfolds against a deep reddish-brown and black lacquer ground, with distant mountains, wooded hills and scattered trees rendered in warm shades of red and orange.
The numerous horses are inlaid, their natural iridescence creating subtle variations of silver, grey, and pearlescent tones.
The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider.
Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings.
