Pompeian Silenus with Serpent and Circular Support – Patinated Bronze, circa 1930
A refined bronze sculpture depicting Silenus, dating from approximately the 1930s and cast from historic moulds derived from original Pompeian models.
The figure is represented in a dynamic, theatrical pose, raising above his head a circular support decorated with vegetal elements. His vigorous body, expressive bearded face, crown of grapes and leaves, and the presence of the serpent evoke the Dionysian world. Silenus, the elderly companion, tutor and follower of Dionysus, is one of the most distinctive figures of classical mythology.
The sculpture displays a deep, dark Pompeian-style patina, with subtle tonal variations that enhance the anatomical modelling, the elaborate curls of the beard, the drapery and the decorative details. The naturally aged surface, with its minor abrasions, oxidation and variations in colour, contributes to the authentic character of the work and is consistent with its age.
The figure stands upon a circular base richly decorated with vegetal and geometric motifs inspired by archaeological examples. The upper circular element suggests that the sculpture may originally have been conceived as a decorative stand or ornamental support.
An impressive and highly decorative object, representative of the Italian tradition of archaeological bronze casting and of the enduring fascination with the artistic heritage of ancient Pompeii.
