BALANCE #5

Sonny Insinna

Balance #5 stems from a reflection on the fragile balance binding every form of life to the planet we inhabit.

A polar bear—an animal that symbolizes an extremely fragile and threatened environment—is depicted standing atop a small sphere. Its seemingly impossible stance serves as a metaphor for a precarious condition: the animal appears to be constantly seeking a point of stability, while the world beneath it seems unstable.

The sphere, adorned with 24-karat gold leaf, represents the Earth. The golden fractures evoke the *kintsugi* technique: what is broken is not concealed but transformed into a visible testament to its own fragility and the possibility of being mended.

The charred wood of the base introduces the element of destruction. It bears the traces of a land we have consumed, altered, and wounded. Upon this blackened surface, the bear seeks its balance, becoming a metaphor not only for the fragility of animals but for our own condition.

In Balance #5, the animal is not merely depicted; it becomes a messenger. Through its body and posture, it conveys a silent question: how much longer can this balance hold before it is too late?

The choice of the polar bear is deliberately symbolic. It is a powerful, seemingly invincible creature, yet deeply vulnerable to human-induced changes. Its physical strength contrasts with the precariousness of the position in which I have placed it.

With this sculpture, I aim to address fragility, responsibility, and survival, as well as the possibility of transforming a wound into a sign of awareness.

Indeed, the gold leaf also represents a possibility: what we have damaged can still be acknowledged, healed, and protected. Balance is fragile, but for that very reason, it is worth defending. Technique

Mixed media: resin, 24-karat gold leaf, and burnt wood.
