Descrizione del venditore
Late Iron Age / Romano-Celtic Dark Glass Bangle
Culture: Celtic / Roman-Celtic
Period: Late Iron Age – Early Roman Period, circa 1st century BC – 1st century AD
Material: Dark monochrome glass
Dimensions: Outer diameter 71.3 mm; inner diameter 59.5 mm; maximum thickness 13.8 mm
Condition: Complete and intact
Description:
A substantial ancient glass bangle of circular form, produced from remarkably thick monochrome dark glass.
The bracelet is characterized by its massive cross-section, smoothly rounded exterior and comparatively flattened inner surface. Its restrained, undecorated appearance places emphasis on the unusually substantial volume of glass used in its manufacture.
The form belongs to the broader tradition of glass arm-rings that developed during the Late Iron Age and continued into the period of increasing interaction between Celtic communities and the Roman world. On typological grounds, the piece is best considered within a Late Iron Age / Romano-Celtic context, probably dating around the 1st century BC to 1st century AD.
Under normal illumination the glass appears virtually black. The surface preserves areas of pale weathering and mineral alteration consistent with prolonged archaeological deposition, contrasting attractively with the dark, glossy underlying glass.
Particularly noteworthy is the state of preservation: despite its considerable age and the inherent fragility of ancient glass, the bracelet survives complete and without major structural losses.
Condition Report
Complete and structurally stable. No major fractures or missing sections are visible. The surface displays scratches, deposits, areas of weathering and alteration associated with age and burial.
Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition report.
Presentation:
Presented on a transparent acrylic display stand, allowing the complete circular profile and substantial cross-section of the bracelet to be appreciated.
Provenance
Acquired legally on the European art market.
