African Mbigou Stone Sculpture – Female Figure – Gabon

An attractive African stone sculpture attributed to the Mbigou carving tradition of Gabon, an area renowned for its distinctive local stone and traditional craftsmanship.

The sculpture depicts a stylised female figure, featuring elegant facial lines and a finely carved hairstyle. A particularly striking feature is the contrast between the smoothly polished face and the intentionally rough, natural sections of stone surrounding the figure.

The lower section incorporates a shallow carved receptacle, giving the piece both a decorative and potentially functional character. Due to its shape, it may have been intended or subsequently used as an ashtray, small bowl or trinket dish, although its original purpose cannot be confirmed.
