Estate History (Pétrus)
Origins: The first documented records of the vineyard date back to the mid-18th century. Unlike the great Châteaux of the Médoc, Pétrus long remained a producer of local significance, held by the Arnaud family for over a century.
The Rise under Madame Loubat: In 1925, Madame Marie-Louise Loubat began acquiring shares of the estate; she became the sole owner in 1945 and worked to position Pétrus at the pinnacle of Bordeaux, alongside the historic Premier Crus.
The Moueix Era: In the 1940s, the merchant Jean-Pierre Moueix entered the picture, securing exclusive distribution rights and subsequently ownership (finalized by the Moueix family in 1969). Together with legendary winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet, he transformed Pétrus into a global icon. Today, the estate is led by Jean Moueix and winemaker Olivier Berrouet.
Unique Terroir: Situated at the highest point of the Pomerol plateau, the vineyard covers approximately 11.4 hectares. Its distinctive feature is the soil—composed entirely of blue clay dating back 40 million years—which is capable of retaining water during dry spells and imparting a unique richness to the grapes. The vineyard is planted 100% with Merlot.
