A 1/12 écu had a value of 5 sols (1/4 of a livre). This denomination became popular as a trade coin for the trade with the Levant, despite its relatively small value. Originally a French royal coin with a portrait of a young Louis XIV - hence the nickname "luigino" ("small Louis") - several imitations were made in French feudalities, among them Dombes. The Dombes version, with its appealing portrait of the princess, was in turn imitated by several Italian states, with only minor modifications to portrait, arms, and sometimes even inscription.
