Raro e intenso ritratto dello scrittore, drammaturgo e regista Fernando Arrabal, fotografato da Mario Dondero verosimilmente a Parigi negli anni Sessanta.
Arrabal è raffigurato giovane, con gli occhiali e una caratteristica maglia a righe, in un atteggiamento spontaneo e assorto. Sullo sfondo, immagini e opere disposte sulle pareti contribuiscono a creare un ritratto ambientato, lontano dall’ufficialità e particolarmente rappresentativo dello sguardo partecipe di Dondero verso scrittori, artisti e intellettuali.
Trasferitosi a Parigi nel 1955, Mario Dondero entrò in contatto diretto con alcuni dei maggiori protagonisti della cultura europea. I suoi ritratti non erano semplici immagini celebrative: nascevano dalla frequentazione personale dei soggetti e dalla volontà di restituirne carattere, ambiente e presenza umana.
Fernando Arrabal, nato a Melilla nel 1932 e stabilitosi in Francia nel 1955, è una delle figure più radicali del teatro europeo del secondo Novecento. Drammaturgo, poeta, romanziere e regista, fondò nel 1962, insieme ad Alejandro Jodorowsky e Roland Topor, il Movimento Panico, esperienza legata alle ricerche surrealiste e alla sperimentazione teatrale.
L’incontro tra Dondero e Arrabal rende questa fotografia un significativo documento della cultura d’avanguardia europea del secondo Novecento.

Fernando Arrabal, born in Melilla in 1932 and established in France from 1955, is one of the most radical figures in post-war European theatre. A playwright, poet, novelist and filmmaker, he founded the Panic Movement in 1962 together with Alejandro Jodorowsky and Roland Topor, developing a form of theatrical and artistic experimentation closely connected with the legacy of Surrealism.
The encounter between Dondero and Arrabal makes this photograph a significant visual document of the European avant-garde culture of the second half of the twentieth century.
