Avant l’oubli

An original painting by Mehdi, accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity and an original poem written specifically for this work by the artist.

Avant l’oubli is an expressive figurative painting built through movement, colour and layers of pigment. Red, ochre and yellow fields create an intense, almost atmospheric space, gradually giving way to darker and heavier passages. Pigment has been dragged, scraped and reworked across the surface, leaving visible traces of the process and giving the painting a strong physical presence.

A solitary figure emerges from the composition, its face partially concealed by long hair. The figure is deliberately left unresolved. There is no fixed story attached to it: the viewer might see someone leaving, arriving, remembering, waiting, searching — or something entirely different.

This openness is central to the work.

In the spirit of Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author, the meaning of a work does not ultimately belong to the person who made it. Once a painting leaves the studio, it enters the experience of the person who lives with it. Memory, imagination and personal associations become part of the work.

The painting therefore does not ask to be understood as much as experienced.

The title Avant l’oubli — Before Forgetting — suggests a moment suspended between presence and disappearance. It is deliberately open-ended, allowing the viewer to bring their own story to the image.

About the Artist

Mehdi is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, poetry and acting. His creative work moves between image, language and performance, with each discipline informing the others.

Alongside his visual art and poetry, Mehdi has developed an international acting career, appearing in productions including Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and Netflix’s Captive, as well as other international television productions.

His experience as an actor informs the way he approaches the human figure. Rather than treating the figure simply as a subject, he approaches it as a presence; something carrying an unseen history, emotion and possibility. The viewer encounters the figure as they might encounter a character in a film: enough is revealed to create curiosity, while much remains deliberately hidden.

His work as a poet brings another dimension to the paintings. Like poetry, the images are built around suggestion rather than explanation. What is left unsaid can be as important as what is visible.

This intersection of acting, poetry and painting has become an important part of Mehdi’s artistic language: creating works that are atmospheric, emotionally charged and deliberately open to interpretation.

The Poem

Each painting can exist independently, but Avant l’oubli is accompanied by an original poem written by Mehdi specifically for the work.

The poem is not intended to explain the painting or dictate what the viewer should see. Instead, it offers another point of entry into the same emotional world, allowing image and language to exist beside one another.

A Painting to Live With

The work was made with particular attention to atmosphere, movement and physical surface. The visible brushwork, layered pigment, scraped passages and variations in density are integral to the painting and its execution.

It is intended to reveal itself gradually. Details become more apparent with distance and then disappear again when viewed up close, making the experience of the painting change depending on how it is encountered.

This is a painting intended to be experienced rather than simply used as decoration. It deserves a place where it can be seen, lived with and given the attention its atmosphere and physical presence invite. The artist would particularly prefer the work not to be placed where it might become background decoration, such as in a restaurant or hotel lobby.
