Opera pubblicata anonima, ma bibliograficamente attribuita a Carlo Bettoni (1735–1786).

Affascinante e precoce trattato italiano dedicato al problema del volo umano e dei nuovi sistemi di locomozione, pubblicato nel 1784, appena un anno dopo le celebri esperienze aerostatiche dei fratelli Montgolfier.

L’autore parte esplicitamente dalla recente invenzione del pallone aerostatico e propone proprie macchine destinate al movimento per aria, per acqua e per terra.

L’opera comprende sezioni dedicate alla Macchina volante per aria, alla navigazione e alla locomozione terrestre, accompagnate da un importante apparato tecnico-matematico.

Sono presenti calcoli relativi alla resistenza dei fluidi, alla velocità, alla propulsione navale e all’azione dei remi.

Particolarmente suggestiva l’Introduzione, nella quale l’autore sostiene che molte invenzioni ritenute impossibili attendono semplicemente qualcuno disposto a cercarle, prendendo come esempio proprio la conquista del volo.

Il volume costituisce quindi un’interessante testimonianza dell’entusiasmo scientifico e tecnologico provocato in Europa dalle prime ascensioni aerostatiche.

A fascinating and remarkably early Italian treatise concerning human flight and mechanical transportation, published in 1784, only one year after the celebrated Montgolfier balloon experiments of 1783.

The author explicitly discusses the recent invention of the aerostatic balloon and develops his own concepts for machines capable of travelling through the air, over water and on land.

The work contains sections devoted to a “Macchina volante per aria” (Flying Machine for the Air) as well as systems for water and terrestrial transportation.

Of particular scientific interest is the extensive mathematical treatment accompanying the proposed inventions, including calculations concerning fluid resistance, velocity, naval propulsion and the mechanical action of oars.

The Introduction is particularly evocative of the technological optimism of the Enlightenment: the author argues that mankind often fails to discover apparently impossible things simply because nobody has seriously attempted to find them, citing the recent conquest of the air as his principal example.

The book therefore represents a fascinating document of the extraordinary European enthusiasm for aviation and human flight immediately following the first Montgolfier ascents.

Remarquable traité italien consacré au vol humain et aux nouveaux systèmes de locomotion, publié en 1784, seulement un an après les célèbres expériences aérostatiques des frères Montgolfier.

L’auteur évoque explicitement l’invention récente du ballon et développe ses propres projets de machines destinées à se déplacer dans les airs, sur l’eau et sur terre.

L’ouvrage comprend notamment une section intitulée « Macchina volante per aria », ainsi que des développements consacrés à la navigation et au transport terrestre.

Ein außergewöhnlicher früher italienischer Traktat über Menschenflug und mechanische Fortbewegung, erschienen 1784 – nur ein Jahr nach den berühmten Ballonversuchen der Brüder Montgolfier.

Der Autor nimmt ausdrücklich auf die neue Erfindung des aerostatischen Ballons Bezug und entwickelt eigene Konzepte für Maschinen zur Fortbewegung in der Luft, auf dem Wasser und auf dem Land.

Das Werk enthält unter anderem den Abschnitt „Macchina volante per aria” sowie ausführliche Überlegungen zu Wasser- und Landfahrzeugen.

Von besonderem wissenschaftlichem Interesse sind die zahlreichen mathematischen Berechnungen über Strömungswiderstand, Geschwindigkeit, Schiffsantrieb und die mechanische Wirkung von Rudern.

Een bijzonder vroege Italiaanse verhandeling over menselijke vlucht en mechanisch transport, gepubliceerd in 1784, slechts één jaar na de beroemde ballonexperimenten van de gebroeders Montgolfier.

De auteur verwijst expliciet naar de recente uitvinding van de luchtballon en ontwikkelt eigen ontwerpen voor machines die zich door de lucht, over het water en over land zouden kunnen voortbewegen.

Het boek bevat onder meer het hoofdstuk “Macchina volante per aria”, naast uitvoerige beschouwingen over vervoer over water en land.
