Ameagari 雨あがり(あめあがり) | Ido Masao 井堂雅夫(いどうまさお)

This work "Ameagari" is a lyrical woodblock print that captures the moist atmosphere right after the rain stops and the beauty of faint light shining through gaps in the clouds.
By making full use of the traditional multicolor printing technique, it delicately expresses the texture of water-wet trees and townscapes, and the nuance of atmosphere containing a unique moisture.
The moment when rain clouds leave and light begins to shine through again is depicted.
The gradation created by layering multiple blocks repeatedly gives deep depth and shading to the landscape.

Artist Profile:
1945: Born in Manchuria.
1960: Moved to Kyoto City.
1972: Started creating woodblock prints.
1973: Selected for the Japan Print Association Exhibition; Selected for the Nichido Print Grand Prix; Awarded the Sankikai Newcomer Award and recommended as a member.
1983: Held the "Kyoto Hyakkei Woodblock Print Three-Person Exhibition" with Tomikichiro Tokuriki, Clifton Karhu, and Masao Ido, sponsored by The Kyoto Shimbun (Kyoto); Held the "Masao Ido Dyeing and Woodblock Print Exhibition", sponsored by IBC Iwate Broadcasting (Morioka).
1990: Held the "Masao Ido Exhibition" (Chicago); Special invited artist for the Graz Art Association Exhibition (Austria).
1993: Held the "Masao Ido Woodblock Print Exhibition" commemorating the broadcast of the NHK Taiga Drama "Ryukyu no Kaze" (Nihombashi Mitsukoshi, Okinawa Mitsukoshi).
1999: Established the Non-Profit Organization (NPO) Hanamaki Cultural Village; Assumed the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of the NPO "Hanamaki Cultural Village Council".
2003: Created original artwork for 4 types of the Kinki regional stamps "Kyoto Events" issued by Japan Post; Held the "Seeing Kyoto - Masao Ido Woodblock Print Exhibition" (Kyoto Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Important Cultural Property Kyodo).
2004: Collected by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
2006: Collected by the Library of Congress, USA.
2007: Appeared on NHK World TV "Begin Japanology".
2016: Passed away.
