Asahel Grant - The Nestorians; or, The Lost Tribes - 1843

A very RARE and beautiful and interesting book..."The Nestorians; Or, The Lost Tribes" containing Evidence of their Identity; their Manners, Customs, and Ceremonies. With Sketches of Travel in Ancient Assyria, Armenia, Media, and Mesopotamia; and Illustrations of Scripture Prophecy by Asahel Grant, Second Edition published by John Murray, London, in 1843. First published in 1841. Asahel Grant (1807-1844) was one of the first American missionaries to Iraq. In 1835 he went to Iran as a missionary settling at Urmia and working among the Nestorians there and elsewhere in western Asia. He had little success in converting the fierce Nestorians, who he considered among the "ten lost tribes" of Israel. Realising that their independence was under threat he tried to persuade them to negotiate with the Turks. They refused and and in 1843 ten thousand of them were massacred. Grant escaped to Mosul where he died of a fever in 1844. The book includes a fold-out map of the Country of the Nestorian Christians at the beginning of the book.
Brown cloth boards with a blind stamped border. Minor marks and wear to the boards. Title label with black lettering affixed to the spine. Name of previous owner on the title page.
