Koichiro Kurita (略歴) biography:
Studied visual psychology at Kwansei Gakuin University. Worked as an advertising photographer in Tokyo for 20 years. After reading American writer Henry David Thoreau's “Walden,” he identified “nature” as a crucial element for artistic creation. He established a studio in the Yatsugatake Mountains and pursued fine art. Since then, he has continued creating works centered on the timeless human theme of “the relationship between nature and humanity.” In 1990, he received a grant from the Asian Cultural Council (Rockefeller Foundation) to study photography in New York. Following a solo exhibition the next year, he moved to the United States. Based in New York and Boston for nearly 30 years, he completed the decade-long project “Beyond Spheres” on Thoreau and Fox Talbot before returning to Japan. In 2020, he established a gallery and studio in Tamba Sasayama City, Japan, and launched the “Slow Photography” project, focusing on the production of calotypes, the origin of photography.
