Impressive large double-sheet view of TYRE on the Southern-Lebanese coast.
Drawn from nature by the famous Dutch traveler and topographer Cornelis de Bruyn (1652-1726) during his voyage to the Levant.
Tyre was an important seaport city in ancient Phoenicia.
It was conquered by the CRUSADERS in 1124 during the Venetian crusade and became one of the most important cities of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. The city was the site of the archbishop of Tyre, the most famous one was the historian William of Tyre.
De Bruyn describes the site of Tyre while passing by on a ship as being mostly in ruins, but mentions a "Castle", indicated by letter "A". This could possibly be the famous "Crusader Cathedral" which was later destroyed.
Etching with 3 original folds, of which 2 are rather flattened.
RARE FIRST EDITION. Dated: Delft, 1698. Published in " Reizen van Cornelis de Bruyn...".
Scarce large paper edition with exceptional large margins.
Size of the whole sheet: 66.5 x 33cm
Excellent condition! Strong and fresh paper quality, clear imprint of the etching.
