Descrizione del venditore
Italian school (XIX) - The reception in the palace.
74 x 106 cm (without frame) - 95 x 127 cm (with frame).
Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame.
The painting belongs to the genre of costume painting, widely popular in the second half of the 19th century, which evokes the social life of the 18th century aristocracy. The scene is set in a sumptuous hall decorated with gilded stuccoes, columns and arches, enlivened by gentlemen in frock coats and powdered wigs and ladies in silk gowns. At the centre a gentleman in a red coat bows to greet a seated lady, while on the left a gentleman in a blue suit sits beside a small table with a silver service. In the background a group of musicians and a servant carrying a tray complete the composition. The quick brushwork and bright palette convey the sheen of the fabrics and the festive atmosphere with liveliness.
