A very RARE and beautiful book..."Switzerland illustrated in a series of views taken expressly for this work by W.H. Bartlett" published in 1836 by George Virtue...only vol II with some faults....Giant map in overall very good condition. Lacking text pages from 17 to 40. Lacking plates at page 23, 57,79,84,85,93,95,103,106,126,128,147. Inside overall text clean, plates with some spotting on margins but overall good for age!!! Externally light wear around edges and corners, shelfwear.
Also in the book....the first 32 pages of "The Gallery of Modern British Artists; Consisting of a Series of Engravings from Works of the Most Eminent Artists of the Day" published in 1834 by Simpkin....A substantial engraved gallery of contemporary British art, presenting landscape, architectural, and picturesque subjects. The work reflects the popularity of topographical and scenic illustration of the period, with subjects ranging from rural English landscapes to continental views.This volume reproduces works associated with the Royal Academy and the flourishing British school of landscape painting, including works after J. M. W. Turner, David Roberts, Samuel Prout, Clarkson Stanfield, and others associated with the flourishing of British landscape art and print culture. Pages clean, present 30 engravings with tissue guards, a few plates with ancient water sign on margins.
